About Us

Het Bokt

The “HET BOKT” Equine Clinic in Peer opened its doors on July 5, 2015. The name is derived from the nearby Bokt industrial park.

The founders are veterinarians Steven Dhondt and Liesbeth Winters. Both graduated from Ghent University in 2004 and had already become a couple during their studies. Since then, they have built a successful veterinary practice in Pelt and the surrounding area, with DAP De Kolis providing care for small pets (dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.) and DAP Vee-Kracht providing care for large animals (cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas, …). DAP Dhondt consists of the mobile equine practice as well as the reproduction center and breeding station KI-Het Bokt, located on Willebrordusstraat in Pelt.
You can count on their services not only in North Limburg, but they are also making their mark on the Walloon side of Belgium: in the beautiful town of Durbuy, they represent the practice Vétérinaires équins de Septon, currently operating as an equine mobile practice and reproduction center, but soon to also serve as a surgical clinic.

Het Bokt Equine Clinic in Peer serves as a referral center specializing insecondary-level veterinary medicineand surgery. The clinic has made significant investments in a highly trained team and state-of-the-art medical equipment to ensure it can provide the highest quality of care, combined with its renowned personalized service and accessibility.

It goes without saying that primary and secondary care services will remain strictly separate. Horses treated on referral from other veterinarians will continue to be monitored at home by the referring veterinarian.

“HET BOKT” consists of two buildings connected by a covered walkway. This way, you never have to walk through bad weather with sick or recently operated-on animals.

One building consists of 19 stalls, each equipped with a feed trough, an electric water supply, and a small window to look outside or into the hallway. There are drainage holes in the floor to keep the stalls as dry as possible.  There is the option to bed the stalls with wood shavings or straw, and there are stalls with rubber flooring for horses in casts, young foals, or animals that have difficulty standing.  This building also houses an indoor arena for lunging or letting horses run free, as well as an area for examining horses or caring for hospitalized animals, which is also equipped with rubber mats to prevent the horses from slipping. Critically ill patients are under camera surveillance so they can be monitored 24/7.

The clinic building consists of an examination room with an examination cage and an X-ray room, two recovery rooms, an operating room with an observation area, a lab, a reception area, and a pharmacy.
The upper floor consists of an apartment where at least one veterinarian is always present to ensure on-call care and overnight monitoring of hospitalized and critically ill patients.

Adjacent to the clinic is a grassy area where horses recovering from colic can graze, and across the road are the isolation stalls and pastures.
